“Capabilities in Public Health Emergencies: Communicating during COVID-19 and Beyond”

Virtual Talk with Harvard’s Elena Savoia

In this virtual lecture, Dr. Savoia will discuss principles of emergency risk communication and what types of capabilities governmental organizations need to put in place to be able to effectively communicate to their audiences. Examples from the COVID-19 pandemic and current vaccination efforts will be discussed as well as ways to measure how well we communicate to the public across various types of audiences.

 

Elena Savoia, M.D., M.P.H., is the deputy director of the Emergency Preparedness, Research, Evaluation & Practice Program at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. A Senior Scientist in Biostatistics, a medical doctor by training, and the deputy director of the Emergency Preparedness Research, Evaluation & Practice (EPREP) Program, she has for the past 15 years conducted research and training activities focused on public health emergency preparedness. Dr. Savoia has devoted her professional life to the use of quantitative and qualitative methods to measure public health systems’ capabilities in response to large-scale emergencies and to assess populations’ behaviors and reactions in response to a crisis. She has provided technical assistance to local, state and international agencies in emergency preparedness evaluation and training. Her work has focused on the advancement of evaluation science to assess the elements of a public health system that lead to a successful response and identifying population-based factors and workforce training and characteristics that may improve the capacity and resiliency of a public health system. During the past three years she has expanded her field of research to the evaluation of programs aimed at countering violent extremism. Dr. Savoia’s portfolio of activities include projects sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Department of Homeland Security, National Institute of Justice, World Health Organization, North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
